Best Oral Presentation and Best Digital Poster Presentation
Authors accepted into the scientific program will have the opportunity to receive a Best Oral Presentation and/or Best Digital Poster Presentation award that is available for each Discipline (one of each award per Discipline).
Awardees will be selected based on the quality of the underlying research (or case study), the quality of the presentation, relevance to the meeting, and the overall contribution to the Discipline.
The awards will be announced and presented during the Gala Dinner.
IAFS Human Rights Award
This award is presented to an institution or individual expert that has made a significant contribution to the application of any field of forensic sciences to human rights promotion and protection. The last 3 awards were given to the Forensic Division of the International Committee of Red Cross (at IAFS Madeira 2011), to the Argentinean Team of Forensic Anthropology (at IAFS Seoul 2014) and to Dr Joergen Thomsen, one of the fathers of the Istanbul Protocol (at IAFS Toronto 2017).
Ian Riebeling Memorial Medal
This award was established in honour of the late Ian Riebeling, a forensic document examiner with Forensic Science SA in Adelaide. Ian passed away suddenly in February of 2001 and was an active member of the Society. He had held the position of President of the South Australian Branch of the ANZFSS and many other positions in the preceding years.
The medal is awarded every two years, to the best new practitioner (general ANZFSS member) who presents either a paper or poster at the ANZFSS International Symposium. The Ian Riebeling Memorial Medalist is selected from the pool of oral and poster presenters who are within their first five years, or part-time equivalent, of their employment as a forensic practitioner. Presenters need to have declared this at the time of their registration.
In addition to the medal, a monetary prize of A$1,500.00 is awarded by Ian’s family so the winner can advance their professional skills by attending the following ANZFSS Symposium, or an equivalent conference.
The assessment criteria are not limited to but will include the following:

The Meeting Organising Committee will nominate a selection panel to assess presentations by eligible members, which will be chaired by the Scientific Program Chair, and may include Discipline Chairs.
The Adelaide Medal
The 1990 meeting in Adelaide was the first time that IAFS had met outside of the traditional “Western” countries. The hosts of that meeting chose to recognize the event by striking a medal to be awarded to a person who had made a significant contribution to the forensic sciences internationally. The award is known as the “Adelaide Medal”.
The selection process is as follows: An ANZFSS sub-committee composed of the President of the South Australian Branch (SAB) of ANZFSS and two other members of the ANZFSS Council is responsible for identifying nominees for the award. In recognition of the original establishment of the award by SAB, this sub-committee is chaired by the SAB President. This sub-committee will identify major forensic science associations and learned societies from all global regions and forensic science disciplines and will – at least nine months before the upcoming IAFS Meeting – seek from these organizations nominations of one candidate each for the Medal. Each nomination must include the basis for it and a resume of the nominee. The criteria used for the nominees are:
The Medal should be for scientific achievement(s) that had a marked influence on the forensic sciences from an international perspective. Work that resulted in a change of direction, new thinking or significant improvement in existing methodologies should be recognized. It is not intended that the Medal be for management or administrative achievement.
At least six months before the IAFS Meeting, the ANZFSS sub-committee submits a ranked list of three recommended nominees (together with their nomination documents) to the IAFS President. The IAFS Council will select the Adelaide Medalist from this list at least five months before the meeting and the President will invite the Medallist to present the Adelaide Medal Lecture to a plenary session at the meeting. The formal presentation of the medal is made at this session. If appropriate, this lecture may be based on the work recognized by the medalist’s selection for the medal.
The Bryan Found Memorial Symposium Award
Applications for the 2020 Bryan Found Memorial Symposium Award are now open, and will close on 30 March 2020. Completed application forms should be emailed to email@example.com.
Dr Bryan Found was a true champion of Forensic Science, incredibly passionate for improvement and development of the science. As an internationally respected caseworker, researcher and the inaugural Chief Forensic Scientist of Victoria Police, across a 29-year career, he instigated significant progress in many areas of document examination, pattern evidence and education. His impact in bringing cognitive issues to the fore will be felt for years to come, and his influence on document examination globally has been phenomenal.
Bryan was a long standing member of the Victorian Branch of ANZFSS, a former President, and the Chair of the Organising Committee for the 2008 Melbourne Symposium – arguably the first of the new breed of successful symposia. He was also responsible for the infamous cask wine, now an ANZFSS tradition. He was accepted as a Life Member of the Society just weeks before his sudden death at home on October 23rd 2016. In memory of Bryan’s contribution to the ANZFSS over many years and his dedication as a Forensic Officer, the Found family has established a Memorial Scholarship in his name to enable the recipient to attend an ANZFSS Symposium. The scholarship is awarded to a graduate/post-graduate student who meets the requirements below.
The selection criteria are not limited to, but will include, the following:
The applicant is an enrolled full-time student in a graduate or postgraduate course in a topic related to forensic science. Research or study programs aimed at improving and/or developing forensic science in the areas of validity, cognitive factors and education will be prioritised, but any student in any area of forensic science may apply.
The successful applicant will be required to provide an article for the ANZFSS newsletter summarising their experiences at the Symposium.
The applicant may be required to make a presentation to the Symposium either on the benefits of the award or their research.
The Award will consist of $2500 to be used to fund the successful applicant’s attendance at the ANZFSS Symposium in the year of awarding.
If no suitable application is received the Award may not be presented, or may be otherwise distributed at the discretion of the family.
The Douglas M. Lucas. Medal
This award may be presented to an individual to commemorate his / her significant professional contributions to forensic science / forensic medicine.
The nominee should be a person who has distinguished himself / herself in the forensic sciences and who has
• A record of meritorious service to the forensic science community and to professional peer group organisations
• Made significant contributions to forensic science research and has learned publications, been active in the educational fields, and has demonstrated outstanding leadership and management capability, nationally or internationally
• Made outstanding contributions in the national or international aspects of public health, welfare, and safety as these relate to the forensic sciences
The Lucas Medal shall consist of a 14k medal, which reflects the stature of this honour. The award shall, in additional, provide reimbursement for
1- Complimentary IAFS meeting registration
2- Economy Airfare
3- $75 /day per diem
4- Single rate hotel lodging for the duration of the IAFS meeting.
The awardee is expected to make a presentation, the optic to be at the discretion of the recipient, to be known as the Lucas Lecture. The award recipient is encouraged to submit a written paper of the lecture for consideration by the Editor-In-Chief of the Journal of Forensic Sciences.
Any member of the AAFS or a member of the Awards Committee may submit nominations to the Awards Committee. All nominations shall be in writing and may be submitted electronically to the Chair of the Awards Committee.
The deadline for submitting recommendations for nominations to be considered by the Board of Directors is six (6) months prior to the IAFS Triennial Meeting.
The Board of Directors approves or disapproves of the Awards Committee recommendation(s).
Emerging Leader Scholarship
There is an exciting opportunity to receive a complimentary registration for the following:

- Undergraduate students, PhD students and researchers in their early stage of career (up to 5 years post award of PhD) by the Meeting dates.
Applicants must have at least one accepted oral presentation into the IAFS 2020 Program prior to submitting their application.

How to submit
- Applications for Emerging Leader Scholarship will not be considered without an approved abstract submitted for IAFS 2020.
- Once you have been notified of your oral presentation acceptance into the program; log into the abstract submission portal, go to ‘Home’ and select the button ‘Submit Emerging Leader Scholarship Application’.
- Complete the application which includes attaching your letter of support.
Successful applicants will receive the following
- Sponsored registration to attend IAFS 2020 from 17 – 21 May 2021, including the Welcome Reception.
Terms and Conditions
The scholarship is provided on the basis of a delegate submitting the following:
- An abstract for an oral presentation that is accepted in to the Meeting Program
- A support letter from a supervisor/manager
IAFS and Arinex will not provide the following:
- Visa fees (if required)
- Per diems
- Travel insurance (note it is strongly recommended that all applicants arrange travel insurance)
The FSF International Association of Forensic Sciences (IAFS) Scholarship
The International Association of Forensic Sciences (IAFS) Scholarship: Offered Through the Forensic Sciences Foundation (FSF)
PURPOSE: The IAFS is an international association focused on bringing together academics, managers, researchers, and scientists from around the world to discuss and debate issues focal to the forensic science disciplines. The IAFS proclaims its goals and objectives to be: “to develop forensic sciences; to assist forensic scientists and others to exchange scientific and technical information; and to organize triennial meetings.” The FSF is interested in providing an opportunity for an AAFS member to experience this educational venture.
Therefore, the FSF is offering a scholarship to help defray the expenses involved in attending the 22nd Triennial Meeting of the International Association of Forensic Sciences to be held in Sydney, Australia, from September 21–25, 2020.
CRITERIA TO ENTER: If you have been a member of the AAFS for fewer than ten years (includes Associate Members, Members, and Fellows) and have never attended an IAFS meeting, then you are eligible to apply for this scholarship. In order to be considered, you must submit to the IAFS, and have accepted, a podium presentation for the 2020 IAFS meeting.
Within five days of receiving the IAFS acceptance notice, the following items should be sent to Lucy Davis (firstname.lastname@example.org), Chair of the IAFS Scholarship Committee: (1) a copy of your abstract; (2) a copy of the acceptance letter from IAFS; and (3) a copy of your up-to-date curriculum vitae.
SELECTION PROCESS: A committee composed of four FSF Trustees and two AAFS section members will review the submissions. Abstracts will be judged on their technical merit, innovation, and impact to the community.
AWARD: The winner will receive up to $5,000 to cover the costs of airfare, registration, housing, and per diem of $75 for five nights while in attendance at the meeting.
IMPORTANT DATES: The IAFS deadline for abstract submission is January 31, 2020. The IAFS program will make notification to the submitter by April 10. Once acceptance is received, send the requirements (1–3, noted above under “Criteria to Enter”) to Lucy Davis (email@example.com). The winner notification date is dependent on the static nature of the current IAFS timeline.
